"Room for improvement2.5" according to lark. Barbara Metzger is my go-to author when I've been deluged with poor and/or emotionally intense novels. I can depend on her for nice stories and some laughs, or at least smiles. I don't even care that several are the same stories dressed up in different clothes. Ms. Metzger is a master of farce and I love farce. As I said, I can depend on her.Well, not so fast. I don't know what this novel wanted to be. Sometimes it tried to be farce. That didn't pan out. The usual goofy characters weren't funnytwo were just tiresomely unpleasant. It wanted to be a romance too but romance was pretty 'thin on the ground.' Why, you ask? Mostly beca. Where was the romance? Anyone who checks my Goodreads page will see that I read an average of eight books a week. What's more, I read every word of a story - no skimming. You never know what gem you'll miss if you skim. If an author goes to the trouble of crafting a story - wordsmithing for my entertainment - then I will read every word that's offered. On rare occasions, even I cannot bring myself to finish a book. It read more like two people becoming friends or allies . It's deja-vu all over again Dangerous when Cooking I may be experiencing Metzger fatigue, I went on a binge reading her novels and may have gotten inured to her charms. I'll finish this but I'll need serious palate cleansing before I delve into Lord Heartless, which sounds great. I want to enjoy it, without feeling deja-vu all over again. Again. Why fatigued? A personal peeve is authors recycling plots and characters, changing names and shifting some elements around but not really forging fresh stories or fresh personalities in stand-alone novels. After reading a number of BM's books, I've gotten too used to her repertory company of characters: the endangered, physically ill or h
