This book totally surprised me. there are basically two story lines running side by side. one explores a new civilization as it develops literally from the ground up. that while the other story line provides a perspective on a developed society which turns inward and barbaric. both in the same time frame, same extra-sol. Brilliant. Scott Best book I've read since Ender's Game. It doesn't surprise me at all Mr. Tchaikovsky took the Arthur C. Clarke award for it; its clear the book pays homage to Clarke, but not in a derivative way. Tchaikovsky's narrative is unique, some of his chapter titles (for instance "All these worlds") are obviously meant to call . Astonishingly good hard SF novel Wow.
