In anticipation of a few weeks of travel, this has been a great introduction to a culture which is not really as European as I'm used to, nor is it Asian in the way I'm used to. I grabbed a few different books on history and language of Russia, most addressing culture to some degree of course, but this is a great "quickie" guide--don't think language type, but rather an honest experiential guide--what to expect in attitudes, conversations, superstitions, political views, and so on. The material covered gives a degree of depth and insight even as it touches on so many areas without being overly tediou. MaryEllen said Soso. I was expecting more on the customs and culture and less on the history. The first portion is a historical review, which is interesting to history buffs. I just wanted dos and don'ts, so I don't offend anyone while I'm there.. I married Russia, I live Russia, I breath Russia, this is not an accurate depiction of current Russia, this is a history book. My wife and daughter are Russian, I've been to Russia 8 times, all over, (Perm, Moscow, St Petersburg, etc) I have been studying Russia for the past 30 years, 10 Russians work for me, information in this book is very old and outdated, it is more of a history book than a travel guide. Even the words and language is out dated. Russian culture is totally different than what is described in this book.
