DESCRIPTION:

Davidson describes how, with homemade equipment and ideas developed from scratch, 9XM became a tangible example of "the Wisconsin Idea," bringing the educational riches of the university to all the state's residents.. Randall Davidson provides the first comprehensive history of the University of Wisconsin radio station, WHA; affiliated state-owned station, WLBL; and the post–World War II FM stations that formed the WPR network. This is the fascinating history of the innovative work of Wisconsin's educational radio stations, from the first broadcast by experimental station 9XM at the University of Wisconsin to the network of stations known today as Wisconsin Public Radio

Authoritatively researched I just completed reading Randall Davidson's fine book on the history of what is now Wisconsin Public Radio. As a former WPR reporter, I found it both entertaining and fascinating. One of the best unexpected aspects of the book are the wonderful pictures, detailing the roots of radio. There's one in particular that stays with me: a shot of the first car equipped with a "radio." Hey, watch the wires! 9XM Talking would be a perfect text for a radio history course or for any. A very well-done history of early radio in Wisconsin S. Johnston I really enjoyed this history of 9XM/WHA Radio. The author managed to combine an enjoyable, readable narrative with solid, well-documented historiography. Plus he demonstrates his full understanding of the terminology of broadcasting - no annoying mistakes in "radio-speak" in this volume! A good book - recommended highly.. "Good enough" according to Scott. There were some pencil markings at the beginning of the book, but it wasn't too bad. Otherwise the book is in really good condition and it came faster than I thought it would. I'm glad I had a good experience buying a used book.

Stavitsky, University of Oregon. "Given the historical significance of WHA and the added insights about the station's early struggles for survival, this is an important work of broadcast history."—Alan G
